Directly from India, and especially from the state of Tamil Nadu, famous for its Hindu temples, the etymology of the word patchouli would be "patch" meaning green and "ilai", the leaf.
Its transformation is done by letting its leaves ferment and work by distillation or extraction using volatile solvents to obtain a pure essential eighte allowing it to release an extremely powerful and very specific odor.
Although used by some "intriguing" renaissance, it is of course the hippies of the 1970s who democratized and revealed the patchouli in the West of their return from Goa, in particular.
Today this fragrance is found in the most chic perfumeries available from all angles, in roof water, perfume water, pure perfume.
Innumerable therapeutic properties are granted to patchouli because of its essential oil, which is particularly rich in sesquiterpenes, which gives this tropical plant a tonic and anti-inflammatory power. In Kerala in southern India, it is used in traditional medicine.
